The story
NXT_LVL is a South African 3D printing studio that does two things: sells prints that are ready to ship, and prints custom jobs for people who bring their own designs. A normal online store only handles the first half of that.
The thing that made this one interesting is that the products already existed as 3D files, because that is what they get printed from. So instead of photographing everything, I used the actual print files as the product images. Every product page has a model you can spin, zoom, and change the colour of before you buy it.
For custom jobs, someone can drop their own STL file onto the page and watch it render in the browser straight away, with the real dimensions and how much material it needs. If it is too big for the printer, the site says so before they waste anyone time. Then it goes off for a proper human quote, because guessing a price automatically is how you end up doing jobs at a loss.
What I built
- Live 3D product viewer with colour and material switching
- Drag-and-drop STL upload that renders instantly in the browser
- Automatic size and material volume readout, with a warning when a model exceeds the print bed
- Full shop with cart, guest checkout and Payfast
- Admin panel for products, orders and incoming quote requests
- Performance work so the 3D still behaves on a mid-range Android
